The North East Governors Forum, led by Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, recently met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting focused on pressing issues affecting the region, particularly the completion of 17 strategic road projects and the resumption of oil exploration activities.
The governors emphasized the importance of completing critical road infrastructure, including the Kano-Maiduguri Road, a vital artery connecting the six states of the North East region. Other priority roads mentioned include the Bama-Mubi-Yola Road, essential for promoting trade and commerce, and the Port Harcourt-Jos-Bauchi-Maiduguri Railway line, crucial for boosting regional commerce and economic growth.
Additionally, the governors requested the completion of the Maiduguri-Monguno-Baga Road, important for enhancing transportation links in the region. Other key roads highlighted include the Wukari-Jalingo-Yola Road, Duguri-Mansur Road, Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Damaturu Road, and Damaturu-Geidam Road. These infrastructure projects are vital for facilitating economic activities, improving access to markets, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents in the North East.
The governors also urged President Tinubu to revive oil exploration activities in frontier wells, particularly in the Kolmani oilfields located in Bauchi and Gombe States. They emphasized that oil exploration in these areas has the potential to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and increase revenue for the government. Furthermore, the governors requested the resumption of oil exploration activities in the Lake Chad Basin in Borno State, which could provide new revenue streams and enhance energy security.
President Tinubu acknowledged the concerns raised by the governors and assured them of his administration’s commitment to addressing the developmental needs of the North East region. He commended the governors for their support in sustaining the fight against insurgency and promoting peace in the region. The President emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between the federal government and state governments to drive economic growth and development.
