Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced a 50% reduction in fares on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line, effective Thursday, September 4, 2025, to commemorate the second anniversary of its launch. This move aims to make transportation more affordable and encourage more residents to use the rail system, reducing traffic congestion on the roads.
The governor expressed his gratitude for the successful milestones achieved since the beginning of the Blue Line rail operation, highlighting that it has transported over five million passengers safely without a single accident in the past two years. Trains now run every 10 minutes, making over 90 trips daily, and journeys that once took much longer have become faster and easier. Sanwo-Olu urged every resident to take advantage of the reduced fares to experience the Blue Line rail service.
The 50% fare reduction means that anyone who previously paid ₦500 will now pay ₦250. This move is expected to bring relief to daily commuters, workers, students, and traders who rely on public transportation. Transport experts believe that the reduction will encourage more people to use the train, reduce traffic congestion on the roads, and contribute to a cleaner environment.
The governor emphasized that the Blue Line project belongs to all Lagosians and is a testament to what can be achieved through collective trust and dedication. He assured residents that the state government remains committed to expanding infrastructure to make mobility across Lagos easier, safer, and faster. Sanwo-Olu concluded by saying, “Together, we are shaping the Lagos of our future.”
The Blue Line, launched in September 2023, is the first of several rail projects envisioned under the state’s integrated mass transit strategy, designed to reduce congestion, improve efficiency, and enhance productivity in Africa’s most populous city. The fare reduction has been met with joy and appreciation from Lagosians, who see it as a welcome relief from the high cost of transportation.
