The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, today joined the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) and the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) to flag off the Maiden Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Programme for Spouses of Junior Police Officers at the MD Abubakar Police Barracks, Dei-Dei, Abuja, themed “Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities:
The initiative, themed “Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Economic Empowerment,” was unveiled at the M.D. Abubakar Police Barracks, Dei-Dei, Abuja, as part of efforts to improve the welfare and economic wellbeing of police families.
The programme, organised by the NPTF in collaboration with POWA, is designed to equip beneficiaries with vocational skills and empowerment resources that will enable them to build sustainable sources of income and achieve greater financial independence.
The event was hosted by the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, CON, and attended by key stakeholders, including the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Mr. Mohammed Sheidu; the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu; and beneficiary spouses of junior police officers drawn from across the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at the event, IGP Disu described the programme as a strategic investment in the stability, welfare and overall wellbeing of police families, emphasising that the effectiveness and morale of officers are closely linked to the support and welfare of their households.
The Inspector-General commended the spouses of junior officers for their sacrifices and unwavering support, noting that their contributions play a significant role in strengthening the operational effectiveness of the Force.
He encouraged beneficiaries to view the empowerment initiative as a foundation for long-term economic independence and wealth creation rather than a temporary form of assistance.
In his keynote address, the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Mr. Mohammed Sheidu, stated that the programme reflects the Fund’s commitment to supporting police families beyond investments in training, equipment and infrastructure.
He explained that the vocational training and start-up packages provided under the initiative were carefully designed to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for beneficiaries and strengthen household resilience.
Sheidu commended the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for inspiring initiatives aimed at improving the lives of citizens and urged beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity by developing businesses that would positively impact their families and communities.
Also speaking, the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, described the initiative as a deliberate investment in police welfare, morale and professionalism rather than a charitable intervention.
She noted that stronger families contribute significantly to stronger institutions, stressing that national security begins with stability and support at the family level.
The POWA President reaffirmed the association’s commitment to sustaining its partnership with the NPTF and called on other government institutions and corporate organisations to support similar empowerment initiatives for police families.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to improving the welfare of its personnel and their families, assuring that it will continue to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, POWA and other stakeholders towards building stronger police families and a more effective security institution nationwide.
