President Bola Tinubu has approved the rollout of an additional 500 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling stations nationwide as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs and provide cheaper energy alternatives for Nigerians.
The directive, announced after a meeting with state governors on Thursday, brings the Federal Government’s planned CNG network to 1,000 stations across the country.
Tinubu said the move would help Nigerians benefit from the lower operating costs of CNG-powered vehicles, which he noted are between 60 and 80 per cent cheaper to run than petrol vehicles.
He added that the Federal Government and state governments had agreed to work together to ensure reduced fuel costs translate into lower transport fares from October 1.
The President also disclosed that over 120,000 vehicles have already been converted to CNG, with more conversion projects and refuelling facilities being developed nationwide.
The CNG expansion is part of the administration’s efforts to cushion the impact of petrol subsidy removal and provide more affordable transportation options for Nigerians.
