Pope Leo XIV has undergone successful surgery to remove a small, localised nodule from his lung at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, the Vatican has confirmed.
The operation took place on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, after the 70-year-old pontiff disclosed that doctors had discovered the abnormality during recent medical examinations.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the procedure was completed successfully within the expected timeframe, after which the Pope returned to his hospital room to begin his recovery.
The pontiff announced the planned surgery during his Sunday Angelus address on October 11, explaining that doctors had detected the nodule at an early stage and recommended an operation to remove it.
He subsequently expressed appreciation for the prayers and support of the faithful as he prepared for the medical procedure.
The Vatican had earlier indicated that the Pope would remain in hospital for approximately one week following the operation.
Consequently, his scheduled audiences and public engagements have been cancelled through October 20 to allow him time to recover.
The development has attracted prayers and messages of support from Catholics and religious communities around the world.
Church leaders and worshippers have continued to express hope for the pontiff’s speedy recovery as he temporarily steps back from his official responsibilities.
The operation comes as the Pope prepares for a planned visit to South America in November, with Uruguay, Argentina and Peru among the destinations on his itinerary.
The Vatican has promised to provide further updates on his condition as he progresses through recovery.
