The Federal Government has commissioned four transmission substations in Kano State, adding a reported 544MW of wheeling capacity to strengthen electricity transmission and improve power supply to industrial, commercial and residential areas.
The projects, implemented by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in partnership with the Kano State Government, are located in Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi.
At Walalambe, a new substation with two 40MVA transformers provides 80MVA of transformer capacity. Kumbotso has received additional infrastructure at the 330kV level, including 300MVA and 100MVA transformer capacity, while Dakata and Dan-Agundi have each gained an additional 100MVA transformer at the 132kV level.
The new facilities are expected to ease pressure on overloaded substations, strengthen electricity distribution across Kano and create additional capacity to meet previously unmet demand.
At Walalambe, six outgoing feeders are designed to support electricity supply to the Tokarawa Industrial Area, Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and neighbouring communities.
In another significant development, Lee Group, a major industrial enterprise, has reconnected to the national grid after operating independently of it for more than 30 years.
The Dan-Agundi substation, which was previously damaged by fire, has also regained substantial capacity, improving its ability to serve Kano’s ancient city, the Emir’s Palace and surrounding communities.

The projects are expected to support manufacturing activities, improve operating conditions for small businesses, create opportunities for employment and enhance household welfare through stronger electricity infrastructure.
The Federal Government described the investments as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which identifies improvements in the power sector as an important component of national development.
With the completion of the projects, Kano’s electricity transmission infrastructure has received additional capacity intended to support economic activities and improve power supply across the state.
