Nigeria has tightened its border control and health surveillance in response to a fresh Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The outbreak, confirmed on September 3, 2025, has claimed 15 lives, including four health workers, and recorded 28 suspected cases in Kasai Province.
Nigeria’s Port Health Services has strengthened surveillance at all entry points, including airports, land borders, and seaports, to detect potential cases early and prevent community transmission. Inbound travelers from the DRC are thoroughly screened, and their medical history is collected through mandatory forms to identify potential cases. The government has emphasized the importance of coordination among various ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure an effective response to the outbreak.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has heightened surveillance across all entry points and health facilities, advising healthcare workers to maintain a high level of suspicion and isolate suspected cases immediately. The World Health Organization (WHO) has delivered personal protective equipment, laboratory equipment, medical supplies, and a mobile laboratory to support the response efforts. WHO has also released $500,000 from its Contingency Fund for Emergencies to aid in containing the outbreak.
Citizens are advised to avoid direct contact with suspected cases and report any unusual symptoms promptly. Frequent handwashing with soap and water or using alcohol-based sanitizers is essential. Citizens are encouraged to stay updated with official health guidelines and follow guidance from health authorities to prevent the spread of the disease.
