Abdulsalami Abubakar, former military head of state, has urged US President Donald Trump to support Nigeria’s fight against insecurity instead of issuing threats. Trump’s comments, which suggested potential military action against Nigeria due to alleged persecution of Christians, pose a “grave threat to the country’s hard-won unity”. Abdulsalami emphasized the need for unity, wisdom, and diplomacy in navigating this critical moment, adding that division and pride would only exacerbate the situation.
He called on Nigerians to put aside their differences and stand together in defense of the nation’s sovereignty, emphasizing that strategic dialogue is the best approach to engage Washington and de-escalate the tension. Abdulsalami also appealed to the United States to support Nigeria in tackling insecurity rather than issuing threats, highlighting the importance of quiet diplomacy to address any misunderstandings and ensure both countries continue to work together on shared security goals.
The former head of state made these remarks after Trump redesignated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over claims of Christian genocide, warning that the US would stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria if the government failed to protect Christians from attacks. Abdulsalami’s comments come as Nigeria continues to battle insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes across various regions, with renewed calls for international collaboration in addressing the root causes of insecurity.
Abdulsalami’s appeal highlights the need for cooperation between Nigeria and the US to address security challenges, rather than allowing tensions to escalate.
