Public petitions have led to the truncation of 34 lawyers’ nominations for Federal High Court judges positions. The Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) had shortlisted 62 candidates, but only 28 cleared the public feedback under Chief Justice Kekere-Ekun’s transparency policy.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) had called for comments on the suitability of the shortlisted candidates, and petitions/objections were submitted, leading to the disqualification of some candidates. This move aims to ensure that only qualified and suitable candidates are appointed to the judiciary.
The FJSC’s transparency policy allows the public to provide input on candidates, promoting accountability and merit-based appointments. The truncated nominations highlight the importance of public participation in shaping Nigeria’s judiciary.
The 28 candidates who cleared the public feedback will proceed to the next stage of the appointment process. The FJSC will forward their names to the National Judicial Council (NJC) for consideration.
The appointment of Federal High Court judges is crucial for Nigeria’s justice system, and this transparent process aims to strengthen the judiciary’s integrity. The move has been welcomed by stakeholders advocating for judicial reform.
