Free fibroid surgeries have commenced at the Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital, Anambra State, as part of a medical outreach programme organised by friends of Governor Chukwuma Soludo to mark his birthday and that of his wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Nonye Soludo.
The initiative, which provides free medical screening, treatment, and surgeries for residents of the state, is aimed at reducing the financial challenges faced by patients requiring specialised healthcare services.
The outreach covers free myomectomy procedures for women battling fibroids and ovarian cysts, alongside other surgical interventions being carried out at designated hospitals across Anambra State.
Speaking at the commencement of the exercise, the Chief Medical Officer of Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital, Dr. Dozie Udeolisa, described the programme as a life-changing intervention that has provided many women with access to surgeries they could not previously afford.
According to him, the high cost of fibroid surgery has prevented many families from accessing timely treatment, leaving some patients to endure prolonged pain and health complications. He noted that the initiative has removed the financial barrier by offering the procedures at no cost.
Dr. Udeolisa explained that Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital is among the designated centres for the programme, where beneficiaries who completed the registration and screening processes are currently undergoing surgery.
He added that medical screening began before the commencement of operations, with a team of experienced surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals deployed to ensure safe and successful procedures.
The Chief Medical Officer stressed that the duration of each surgery depends on the individual patient’s condition, as every case requires specific medical attention.
He described the turnout of beneficiaries as impressive, noting that several women who had delayed treatment due to financial constraints are now receiving the necessary care without paying for the procedures.
Dr. Udeolisa commended Governor Soludo and his friends for supporting the initiative, describing it as a reflection of compassion and a commitment to improving healthcare delivery in Anambra State.
The medical outreach also includes free cataract surgeries, glaucoma screening and treatment at the Anambra State Specialist Eye Centre, Nise, as well as free hernia surgeries at General Hospital, Umueri.
Dr. Udeolisa urged eligible residents to take advantage of the ongoing programme, assuring beneficiaries that the surgeries are completely free and that they will receive quality medical attention throughout the exercise.
