Nigeria’s Junior Female YellowGreens have appointed Christabel Chukwuonye as captain as the team prepares for the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Division 1 Qualifier in Tanzania.
Chukwuonye will lead Nigeria’s young cricket team as they battle for qualification for the global age-grade tournament, with the continental qualifier scheduled to take place in Tanzania from August 30 to September 5, 2026.
The appointment comes on the back of an impressive run of form for the talented all-rounder, who has established herself as one of the standout performers in Nigeria’s women’s cricket setup.
Chukwuonye recently played a significant role in Nigeria’s campaign at the 2026 Kwibuka Women’s T20I Tournament in Rwanda, where she emerged as the team’s leading wicket-taker after claiming 17 wickets in nine matches.
She also contributed 89 runs during the competition, underlining her value as an all-round performer. Her performances placed her among Nigeria’s leading individual contributors at the tournament.
One of her most notable displays came in Nigeria’s third-place playoff against Brazil, where she took three wickets for 13 runs to help the Female YellowGreens secure the bronze medal. Her performance also earned her the Player of the Match award.
With the captaincy now entrusted to her, Chukwuonye will be expected to combine her on-field ability with leadership as Nigeria begins its qualification campaign in Tanzania.
The 14-player squad selected for the assignment includes Shola Adekunle, Anointed Akhigbe, Deborah Bassey, Jessica Bieni, Christabel Chukwuonye, Favour Effiong, Omosigho Eguakun, Jennifer Godwin, Glory Idiahi, Beauty Oguai, Chisom Okpe, Praise Onaghise, Inyene Ubong and Peace Usen.
The selection reflects the Nigeria Cricket Federation’s continued investment in developing young female cricketers and creating a pathway from age-grade cricket to the senior national team.
Preparations for the qualifier have involved an open camp where players were assessed on their performances, consistency, discipline, adaptability and ability to handle competitive pressure.
The tournament in Tanzania will provide Nigeria’s young players with an important opportunity to test themselves against some of Africa’s leading U-19 teams while competing for a place at the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Beyond qualification, the campaign represents another step in the development of women’s cricket in Nigeria, particularly as the country continues to build a stronger pipeline of young players capable of representing the senior national team in the future.
For Chukwuonye, the captaincy represents another important milestone in her developing international career. Her recent performances have already established her as a player capable of making an impact with both bat and ball.
As the Junior Female YellowGreens head to Tanzania, attention will be on Chukwuonye and her teammates to translate their preparations into strong performances and give Nigeria a realistic chance of securing a place at the global U-19 championship.
The team will be hoping that a combination of talent, discipline, teamwork and effective leadership can propel the Junior Female YellowGreens through the qualifier and closer to another appearance on the world stage.
