American actress Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, has died at the age of 36 following an accidental drug overdose, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina.
Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, after she was found unresponsive at an apartment in Greenville. Emergency responders attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The coroner’s office said toxicology tests detected fentanyl and four other substances in her system: 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. Authorities determined that the combination of drugs resulted in an accidental overdose, with fentanyl identified as the substance most likely to have caused the fatal overdose.
An autopsy reportedly found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death.
Panettiere rose to international prominence through her acting career, particularly for her performances as Claire Bennet in Heroes and Juliette Barnes in Nashville. She began working in entertainment at a young age and went on to establish herself as a recognised Hollywood actress.
Her death comes after years in which she had publicly discussed personal struggles, including addiction and other difficult experiences. In her memoir, This Is Me, she reflected on challenges she faced during her career and personal life.
The circumstances surrounding the source of the drugs remain under investigation. Greenville Police said the case is ongoing, while reports indicate that federal authorities are also examining the circumstances surrounding the drugs involved in her death.
Panettiere’s death has prompted renewed attention to the dangers associated with illicit or contaminated drugs, particularly substances containing fentanyl. Her family and representatives have continued to mourn the actress, whose career spanned several decades.
