Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, the former Governor of Kogi State, has passed away in the United Kingdom at the age of 77. His nephew, Shehu Ahmed, confirmed his sudden passing on September 20, 2026. While the exact cause of his death remains private, family sources revealed that the elder statesman had been battling a protracted illness.
Affectionately known as “Ibro”, Idris holds the distinction of being the longest-serving governor in the history of Kogi State, steering its affairs under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) banner from May 2003 until January 2012. He first won the seat in 2003 by defeating the incumbent Prince Abubakar Audu. His administration left behind a footprint of legacy infrastructure, including the Greater Lokoja Water Scheme, the Lokoja International Market, the Confluence Stadium, and critical educational investments at the Kogi State University in Anyigba. Before his political career, he was an accomplished entrepreneur with successful ventures in furniture manufacturing, hospitality, and construction.
Following the news of his death, the current Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, declared a three-day period of state mourning, directing that all national and state flags be flown at half-mast. Governor Ododo, alongside former Governor Yahaya Bello and other top state dignitaries, visited the deceased’s residence in Abuja to console his family. Describing Idris as a leader of exceptional humility, foresight, and wisdom, Governor Ododo also announced that the Kogi State Government will fully sponsor and arrange a comprehensive state burial to honor the late icon. His remains are expected to be returned to his ancestral home in Abejukolo, Omala Local Government Area, for final burial rites.
